Our home computer contains our family checkbook, e-mail and pictures. We let the kids play educational games on it as well. Unfortunately, this has led to several computer crashes. I use my computer to run my home-based business. It contains my financial records for the past several years, my documents, presentations, e-mail, address book and other critical data. I also use it to store all the music, podcasts and audio books I’ve collected for my iPod, which represents many hours of ripping CDs, purchasing and downloading. It would take me weeks (probably months) of effort to recreate all the things for my iPod, and I don’t know if I could get back the financial information and tax records. Finally, I have pictures of my grandchildren that I don’t want to lose either. Some of these aren’t stored anywhere else. If I lost them, they’d be gone forever.
I have a PC but don’t really know or care how it works – I just need to use it for ongoing medical studies, prescribing information and other work-related things. I sync my Palm Treo to it, which is essential to me being productive as a doctor. It contains important clinical observations and guidelines as well as formulary updates and other critical information.
Unfortunately my Palm Treo has caused my computer to crash occasionally. I’ve been using MirrorDisk online file backup service for over 2 years now. Being able to restore my computer online or get recovery disks (I’ve done both!) has saved me. We have a management consulting and executive development firm. We use our computers for regular communication with our clients, record-keeping, planning, presentations and many other things. Once in the past we lost all of our email program’s content. It had taken years to develop those records and we had to start again from ground zero.
